May 2024 BVE Newsletter
Principal’s Message
Dear BVE Students and Families,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the school during our April Student-led Conferences! I hope you came away with a good understanding of what your child is learning.
On schedule, the April showers are about to bring May flowers! Here at BVE we are exceptionally busy, with field tripsand projects outdoors, growing everything from butterflies to chicks to food and flowers for planting. We are also looking forward to the Grade 3s and 3/4s taking part in the Sturgeon release later this month. Students in the 5/6 and all three 6/7 classes have started their last round of Explorations for the year, where they get to choose to participate in three of the following: Everything Yarn, ProCreate (drawing with Apple pencils), cooking, photography, digital animation, outdoor education, and art exploration.
Kindergarten parents recently came for a final Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) session, observing and exploring print and writing with their children. Grade 2s and 5s are swimming for four sessions, and Grade 7s will be learning to golf. And somewhere in between all of that activity, classroom teachers continue to make time for engaging and challenging lessons to keep each child’s progress moving forward.
Yes, May is a busy, busy time! In the remaining couple of months, there are many opportunities for you to share your time and volunteer with activities if you are able. One very special event was held recently: the Spring Fling Dance!! It was well-attended, well organized, and the students enjoyed dressing up and dancing so much.
The BVE Yearbook Committee is also working hard to complete this year’s annual. Thank you to Lis Harris and Cassie Brummett for putting it together! And thank you to those who have offered to help sponsor the yearbook so each child can get one free of charge! Please note the volunteer section of this newsletter, or reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Many hands make light work, and our school community is stronger with lots of parent involvement.
Sincerely,
Ariel McDowell, Principal BVE

Jump Rope for Heart
BVE is raising funds to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation again this year. The fundraising is all online. Thank you for your support of the Campaign. Students who fundraise online are entered into draws for equipment like soccer balls, water bottles, and skipping ropes. We are announcing winners every day, so please sign up to donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Our school goal is to raise $2000 for the Heart and Stroke foundation. If we raise $2500, we’ll earn ourselves an extra recess!
To help us celebrate the funds we raise, we will do a whole-school Jump Rope event, with different types of skipping, hula hoops, chalk, etc. This year our celebration will take place on May 2nd.
Extracurricular Sports
Another exciting season of Smashball and Volleyball wrapped up, with a tournament at BVE and RSS last week. We’ll have a staff vs. students volleyball/smashball game this week, and all the staff are pretty nervous, as the students have developed very strong skills! Now the gym is full of Skipping Club for all ages on Tuesdays and Thursdays at recess. As well, Track and Field will be starting up soon!
For students in Grade 2 and 5, Swimming has also begun. We are grateful to the Rec Centre for accommodating our annual swimming program. The program will run with three 30-minute lessons, followed by a final fourth swim that will give the students free time in the pool.
Indigenous Education in SD 19
This month, the Indigenous Education Department is highlighting a very painful reality in Canada: murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls. The REDress Project began as an art installation by Métis artist Jaime Black in 2010. Since then, the REDress Project has become a movement and Red Dress Day is annually observed on May 5th.
Indigenous Educator Jessica Stewardson has been into some Intermediate classes to discuss the purpose of this day.
You can learn more about Jaime Black’s REDress Project on his website – https://www.jaimeblackartist.com/exhibitions/
Playground Construction to Begin
BVE was the lucky recipient last year of a Ministry of Education and Childcare playground grant to add to our existing playground more accessible and inclusive spaces. Last year, students had a chance to give their suggestions for priorities for our playground in a survey. The District Maintenance Department has been working with the playground company and a local landscaping company to finalize the plans. They anticipate breaking ground any day now! We are very grateful to the Ministry for recognizing that, though our playground is only 10 years old, it is not very accessible to all. Hopefully we can make it a bit more inclusive!
Sports Day
This year for Sports Day, we will again be doing one big sports day, rather than running separate Primary and Intermediate events. We did this for the first time last year and got lots of positive feedback. We’ve made a few refinements to make it even more successful. All students will have an opportunity to try out all the stations – some of them traditional Track and Field stations, and some of them will be more fun and silly stations. The events will run all day, from about 9am until about 2:00pm. It is a busy day, and we will be needing many helpers, getting younger students from one station to the next, assisting with running stations, etc. If you are available to help on this day, please contact the school office at 250-837-3085. It should be an exciting and fun-filled day!
PAC NEWS
The Begbie View Elementary Parent Advisory Council (BVE PAC) supports BVE events, activities, equipment and more throughout the year….and you might not be aware that every BVE parent is a member of the PAC. This Spring, we are so grateful to the PAC for the purchase of our new Chess timer clocks! The next PAC meeting will be held on Monday, May 6th at 6:30 pm at BVE in the Library.
Yearbook Request from PAC: As the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) continues working on the yearbooks for another school year, we are reminded how important yearbooks are as a connection to our school culture. We would like to provide each student with their own book at no cost. If you or your business would like to support the Yearbook, please email bvepac@gmail.com
Two ongoing fundraisers help support the PAC’s work at BVE: Lovable Labels and True Earth. Details for how you can support the PAC with these fundraisers are on the BVE website under “Posts”.
