November 2023 BVE Newsletter

Oct 30, 2023

DEAR BVE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES,

This past week we held Goal Setting conferences to help students, with their care giver and their teacher, talk about goals and next steps for learning. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in these conferences!

With the beautiful weather, students and staff have been enjoying the opportunity to take learning outside, including practicing important math skills. Surveys and data collection, taking measurements, finding and creating patterns, estimating and solving can all be done outside the classroom, and often this helps students understand that math is truly all around them all the time, and that the skills they are learning are applicable and transferable. This year, one of our school goals is focusing on Numeracy, and on instructional routines and practices that help our students feel confident, capable and excited to learn!

One note to ask: please remind students to keep electronics (smart phones, connected watches, etc.) at home. The BVE staff are finding that many older students are bringing their phones to school, and as the Student Handbook describes, we want our school to be free from the distraction and pressures of being online and connected. Thank you for your cooperation as a family to keep the cell phones and connected devices from coming to school at all – once they are here the temptation to use them is great. If you need to reach your child, or vice versa, the office phone can be used. Looking ahead in November, we will be talking about online safety and respect as a school, and there will be opportunities for student and parent presentations.

Through the month of October, our school-wide focus was on Gratitude, and taking time to reflect on who and what we are thankful for. Without a doubt, I am grateful for the opportunity to the principal at BVE. Every day is fulfilling and challenging, with moments that make me so proud of our students. looking forward to a wonderful month ahead! Please read on to see what we’ve been up to, and what is around the corner this year.

Sincerely, Ariel McDowell BVE Principal

Volunteer Opportunities

There’s always lots going on, and many ways to contribute your gifts to BVE!

Here are a few ways we are looking for help in the weeks ahead:

  • Sewing exploration – we need support with our Sewing Exploration for Grades 6 & 7. Commitment: Fridays from 1:00-2:15
  • Book Fair November 15 & 16 – volunteers to help students select and pay for books during the Fair. Commitment: whatever you can offer on these two days.
  • Breakfast program – prepare and deliver plates of yummy food to each classroom. Commitment: approx. 1 hour, once a week (7:30-8:30am)

New Website Launch

School District 19 (Revelstoke) has been working with a local web design company called Salt and Cedar to update the District websites. Begbie View will be the first website to launch, and the District is hoping for user feedback on the site. We hope you’ll explore the pages and let us know what you think! The website should go live on or around November 1st.

Learn more about our new website and take our feedback survey here.

Book Fair Nov. 15th and 16th

Ms. Wilson and Ms. Wegner are preparing to bring the Scholastic Book Fair back to BVE. Volunteers would be very much appreciated. If you are able to volunteer, please email Ms. Wilson at ewilson@sd19.bc.ca or call the school at 250-837-3085. Proceeds from the Fair will help the library to buy more books for our school!

Extracurricular Sports

We are excited that Ms. Langlois, Ms. Bouvette and Ms. McKenzie have started to offer Gr. 6/7 badminton as an after school extracurricular option, with District tournaments beginning later this month!

Fall Drop Off and Pick Up

The snow is on the way, so a huge THANK YOU to everyone for your continued cooperation to drop off and pick up on Ninth Street. Only families with children in Cornerstones childcare, Kindergarten or Grade One may enter the BVE cul-de-sac by car for drop off AND pick up.

PAC NEWS

The November PAC meeting is Monday, November 6th at 6:30pm in the BVE Library. Childcare is available for FREE, provided by two Grade 7 students! So come on out  The Begbie View Elementary Parent Advisory Council (BVE PAC) supports BVE events, activities, equipment and more throughout the year….and you might not be aware that every BVE parent is a member of the PAC. There are many opportunities throughout the year to contribute – you can help as much or as little as you are able.

The Purdy’s fundraiser will be happening again this year! Please watch for order forms coming home soon. Ongoing PAC fundraisers also include Lovable Labels (which help keep items from ending up in the Lost and Found!) and True Earth.

Get ready for PAC Green Christmas December 21st

On December the 21st we will have our annual Green Christmas Craft Fair. Families donate crafts or items, and our students get to “shop” for Christmas. Each class comes through, and students can purchase gifts and have them gift wrapped. All items will cost between 25cents, up to a few dollars. Please start thinking about what items your family would like to donate. These items can be homemade crafts or recycled items that you would like to receive yourself. Ideas include: premixed seasonal hot chocolate, kitchen utensils, dish towels, jewelry, magazines, mugs, sunglasses, books, homemade table centre pieces, candles, etc! The possibilities are endless! We ask that each family donate about 10 items per child if possible. You are also welcome to donate more than that! We kindly ask that donated items are not too large, as children will be transporting them home. Donations of wrapping paper or gift bags are also appreciated.

You can start dropping off items on Monday, Dec 18th. We will also be looking for volunteers to help sell the items and wrap them – sign up on the PAC board or on the BVE Parents Facebook page.

Please send a small amount of money with your children the morning of Dec. 21st so they may go Christmas shopping! Items are tailored to your child’s budget. Also please send along a bag so that your child can take home their gifts.

Remembrance Day

Our school Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on November 9th. Thank you to Grade 7s for hosting the ceremony, and to Ms. Schadinger’s class for reciting In Flander’s Fields. Please send a small donation if you can to support the Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign. Each child will receive a poppy on November 9th. Here is a video from the Legion about how funds raised

from the Poppy Campaign support the work of the Legion.

Indigenous Education

Children working in a classroom

Tanshi! As the weather continues to slow us down into winter we are excited for students to see and work with a variety of contemporary Indigenous performers this month.

On November 16 at 8:45am we will be treated to a performance of FUSION at the RSS Theatre. This performance highlights the phenomenal talents of world-renowned musician Tunde Jegede, Pow Wow dancer and award-winning flutist Jessica McMann, and Revelstoke’s own Daniel Bhattacharya, as they combine their crafts in a fusion of traditional and contemporary music and dance.

Please view the following links for more information on each of our special guests:

Fire Prevention Week

We are grateful to the Revelstoke Fire Department who has had many BVE classes through the Fire Station for lots of learning and a great tour. We learned that by following a few safety tips, you can prevent fires that may start with cooking:

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

If you have a small (grease) cooking fire and decide to fight the fire…

  • On the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

If you have any doubt about fighting a small fire…

  • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.

We’re looking forward to a visit from the Fire Department in the big truck!
