BVE is located on the shores of the Sn̓xw̌ n̓tkwitkw “Sin-When-tu-Queet-Qu” (Columbia) which means ‘Swift River’. We would like to respectfully honour the four nations on whose land we live and learn: The Sinixt, the Secwepemc, the Ktunxa, and the Syilx Okanagan..
Begbie View Elementary is a community-oriented K-7 school, with approximately 275 students. We are passionate about connecting our students to the environment that sustains us all, and much of our learning is done outdoors. We have a dedicated teaching team who work collaboratively to share their teaching strengths and interests with all students. Our motto, “Growing Together, Being our B.E.S.T.” helps us build our learning on a foundation of respect and responsibility, good effort, safety and thoughtfulness.
Our school recently celebrated a ten year anniversary. BVE staff and students and families have seen a lot of change during the past decade, and we are proud of our vibrant and inclusive school community. This year we have found that many of our conversations involve reflecting on the role of schools and education in Canada’s colonial legacy, and what we can examine in how our own school and community move toward Truth and Reconciliation in a meaningful way. We have talked about the erasure of original place names, language and stories, animal and plant Relatives, and traditional knowledge of this area; we have much to learn and lots of work to do, and so we are diving in!
Central to our school culture is a recognition of the strength that exists in diversity. In nature, diversity ensures plentiful options for adaptation and survival. In a school setting, it is important to nurture diversity within a safe school environment. When multiple strengths and perspectives are celebrated and shared, all learners see themselves reflected, appropriately challenged, and also supported.
We are proud of our school, and welcome visitors and guests. Please call ahead to arrange a visit if you would like (250) 837-3085.
Sincerely,
Ariel McDowell
